Knott’s Scary Farm (also known as Knott’s Halloween Haunt) is a seasonal Halloween event at Knott’s Berry Farm and fact one of largest and most popular Halloween events in Southern California featuring roaming monsters, terrifying mazes, and ‘scare zones’.  In fact, long before there was Universal Horror Nights or the much gentler Mickey’s Halloween Party & Halloween Time at Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm put on the world’s first theme park Halloween Haunt event back in 1973, and its ever increasing popularity makes it must-see experience for any guest visiting Southern California in the fall season.

Now celebrating its 44th year, Knott’s Scary Farm is now the largest Halloween event by any theme park. The idea was introduced by Knott’s marketers George Condos and Martha Boyd, as well as Bill Hollingshead and Gary Salisbury of the entertainment office in September, 1973. The even first began in the “Ghost Town” section in the theme park eventually expanded to the entire 160-acre park. After its initial opening in the 70’s, the event’s success continued throughout the 80’s and pop-culture icons performed at the event. In 1981, actor and parodist “Weird Al” Yankovic joined the cast. Also, Cassandra “Elvira” Peterson became a very popular Halloween Haunt live show and was prominently featured in many Knott’s Scary farm events until 2001. Another popular show is “The Hanging” and has been a major part of the Haunt event since the 1979. The hilariously comical “Hanging”, a live show that lampoons famous, “news worthy” people in a series of staged hangings, is now a staple of the Haunt.

For Knott’s Halloween Haunt 2016, the park has constructed 8 haunted houses, 5 scare zones, a zombie shootout attraction, and 2 live shows and is recommended only for brave guests 13 and up. Seasonal workers are cast as “clowns and monsters”, roaming the park in terrifying scare zones, amidst haze produced by giant fog machines. From the moment you arrive, your heart will be jumping and your knees will be shaking in terror because you’ll sense the monsters in the thick fog. Some sneak up on you quietly while others slide out at you or have noise-making devices to startle you out of your skin. These monsters will find ways to scare the bravest of souls.

Don’t forget to explore these scare zones:  Ghost Town Streets, Muertos, CarnEVIL, Hollow Scare Zone (new this year and features the Headless Horseman rising out of the fog), and The Deadly 7 with sadistic monsters representing the seven deadly sins – all hiding in dark corners! These scare zones have great mazes. Some mazes feature cutting-edge laser guns ravenous hordes of zombies. You can also fight off demon samurais whose souls are cursed to rot within the depths of purgatory. You’ll also be able to experience a blood-soaked barn filled with carnivorous animals seeking to prey on human flesh in the Red Barn gore maze.

If you have little ones, you probably want to stay away from the evening scare event, but you can still enjoy gentle Halloween fun weekends in October at Knott’s during the day at Camp Spooky. You can buy discounted daytime Knott’s Berry Farm tickets here from us. Knott’s Spooky Farm is a daytime event for children ages 3-11. Camp Spooky is included with regular admission to Knott’s Berry Farm. Kids can dress in costume, participate in a costume contest, dance with the Peanuts Gang, see a show, do a kid-friendly spooky Halloween maze, and even go trick-or-treating in Ghost Town.
